Mike’s Place was named in 1973 in honour of Lester B. Pearson. Pearson, whose nickname was Mike, was Chancellor of Carleton University until his death in 1972. He served as Prime Minister of Canada from 1963 to 1968. During this time, his government introduced student loans, universal healthcare, the Canadian Pension Plan, the Order of Canada, and the contemporary Canadian flag. He was also the winner of the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize for the creation of the UN peacekeeping force to ease the Suez Crisis in 1956. An official portrait hangs in the pub to this day.
Mike’s Place History
During the 1970s, the GSA was preoccupied with finding a permanent home for Mike’s Place, which had been moved numerous times by the university administration. This did not stop them from officially naming the pub during the 1972-73 school year.
In the 1980s, Mike’s Place found a permanent home in its present location. Renovations in 1986 expanded the grad pub from approximately thirty seats to 75, and included the construction of a permanent bar.
Recent renovations include a new bar, new sound system, stonework, and more. The renovations have greatly improved the atmosphere of the bar to the relaxed and welcoming place it is now.
