Kids and Coffee: The GSA Welcomes Graduate Student Parents and Guardians
2016/08/12 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm
Are you a parent or guardian studying at Carleton at the graduate level?
Have you faced issues or struggles balancing your studies and parenting role?
Are there services on-campus that have been helpful?
We want to hear from you!
Graduate student parents and guardians at Carleton University face many barriers when pursuing their graduate studies. These can include finding safe, flexible, and affordable childcare, finding tables for changing diapers and spaces for breastfeeding, academic accomodations specific to their life as parents or guardians, and a variety of other issues. Single, racialized, Indigenous, queer, or International student parents and guardians or those with disabilities can also face additional barriers to pursuing graduate studies while caring for children.
Recognizing these and other barriers, the Graduatre Students’ Association (GSA) has launched an initiative to hear from graduate student parents guardians, with the goal of transforming our campus community into a welcoming place for our student parent and guardian members.
We will be holding an informal focus group called Kids and Coffee on Friday, August 12th, at 10 AM in the GSA lounge on the 6th floor of the University centre to hear from a small group of graduate student parents and guardians and their children. Come let the GSA’s executive know how our campaign to make our campus more child and parent friendly can take shape!
Free coffee, tea and snacks for grown-ups, and juice, treats, and art activities for the little ones! We will also be inviting parents to bring any unwanted toys or activities to add to our exisiting toy collection in order to make the lounge a great place for kids!
Please forward widely and invite any student parents you know. Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org with the name of parent/guardian and number and ages of children for planning purposes.
We look forward to meeting you!
