The GSA is holding a student-focused consultation for the development of Carleton’s Sexual Assault Policy. As a result of provincial legislation, Ontario colleges and universities have been mandated to develop campus-specific policies to address sexual violence within our campus communities.
The process here at Carleton has been in motion since summer of last year, beginning with individual stakeholder meetings, which have included students and service centres, workers’ unions, and internal administrators. However, a breakdown in this process began a few months ago resulting from the unilateral decision of the internal administrators to pull out of the stakeholder consultations claiming a lack of faith in the procedure.
This decision has halted official consultations and stalled the community’s progress to develop an inclusive policy. It is important that we continue working together to create a policy that we are not only proud of, but that serves our community as this legislation was designed to do. Leaving the development of the policy to the university’s administrators will not achieve these goals.
The GSA also believes that this process could be more inclusive of our diverse student population as necessary for a well-rounded policy. We would like to take this opportunity at our consultation to address concerns of intersectionality with regard to sexual violence, such as gender, sexual orientation, race, language, Indigenous identity, faith, ability and other factors. Many of the voices of our community have not been heard on this issue and in the creation of the policy, so we would like to give you the opportunity to tell us your point of view.
Pizza will be provided with dietary restrictions accommodated.
Where: GSA Lounge, 600 UC
