The Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) at Carleton University would like to express its utter distain for homophobic and threatening internet memes directed at a fellow student. Homophobia, harassment, and the inciting of hate and violence will not be tolerated on our campus. We stand in solidarity with Arun Smith and wish to express deep respect and gratitude for the courage he has shown by publicly addressing the abuse that has been directed at him.

The hatred expressed in the memes shocked our campus community and reminds us how much more work needs to be done to challenge oppressive behaviour. On May 16 the Canadian Federation of Students-Ontario and the Lesbian Gay Bi Trans Youth Line launched a campaign to challenge homophobia and transphobia on college and university campuses across the province. This campaign, launched by and for students, includes a campus guide explaining terminology, information on bullying, information on the Ontario Human Rights Code, tips for organizing a campaign, event ideas, and listings of local and provincial resources and research. Postcards and buttons calling on students to challenge homophobia and transphobia have also been created as part of the campaign.
