The Graduate Students’ Association at Carleton University stands in solidarity with the brave students of Bangladesh who are courageously advocating for justice, equality, and fundamental human rights despite facing state-sanctioned violence and political suppression.
With the current blackout of telecommunications, students in Bangladesh are still mobilizing to challenge a discriminatory court decision to continue a quota system favouring those who participated in the 1971 liberation movement. This does not represent the interests of the Bengali people and shows favour and nepotism instead of merit and equal opportunity.
We recognize their immense challenges and commend their relentless pursuit of a more just and equitable society. We also recognize the challenges faced by graduate students from Bangladesh studying in Canada who do not know where family members are because of state violence. Many students from Bangladesh are unable to access the financial institutions essential to continuing their studies in Canada.
We are deeply moved by the stories of resilience and determination from Bangladeshi students who, despite facing adversity, continue to demand their rights and stand against systemic oppression. Their fight is not just their own, but a universal struggle for dignity and justice that resonates with students on a global scale.
The GSA Carleton University condemns any form of violence, discrimination, and repression faced by students in Bangladesh. We call upon the international community to amplify their voices and support their cause. It is imperative that we stand together in solidarity, transcending borders and uniting in our shared commitment to human rights and social justice.
To our fellow students in Bangladesh, know that you are not alone. Your courage inspires us, and we stand with you in your fight for a brighter, more equitable future. Together, we will continue to strive for a world where every student can pursue their education free from fear and oppression.
In solidarity,
Graduate Students’ Association
